I've now uploaded the completed quilt, no longer a WIP... for those who viewed/faved it as WIP, Red Red Rose, this is the same quilt, simply an updated photo.
The project was not only to complete the quilt, a challenge in terms of piecing, but also to use a whole bunch of reds that I received as a result of a fabric exchange. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.
The compass and the nyb units are all paper pieced. (For the non-quilter's - nyb stands for 'new york beauty' - the units so named because of their resemblance to the statue of liberty's crown).
This quilt was started as a personal challenge, but also as a Bar Mitzvah gift for a young man who has been a USC fan since he was about 2yrs old... hence the red/gold theme and title.
Original design by Jacqueline de Jongg.
Quilt won 3rd place in traditional pieced quilts category at Road to California Quilt show, Jan 2009.

The flowing shapes of those round arcs, arranged in that touching-but-not-quite-connected pattern, makes for such an unusual shape.
I absolutely love the stars. THAT'S a star.
isn't paper piecing the most wonderful thing
have you decided how to quilt it yet??? what colour will you use for the binding?
